{mini} PETALS PATCH ceremony.

We had our meeting today at the park. The girls were celebrating earning their Daisy Petals. info on daisy petals here.
The girls have worked making flowers to represent the colors -as well as learning about each petal. They have been sharing examples, and practicing being a Daisy. Everyones favorite seems to be "caring and considerate" and we had many examples of that at the meeting today. We also VOTED today. The girls voted to have the end of the year field trip to the Downtown Aquarium! It was almost Unanonymous. Then they also all expressed interest in having a campout/cookout in my backyard with all of our families. The girls are also trying hard to twist my arm for a girls scout sleepover that same night. We will see just how INSANE i really am. While we were in circle the girls also learned a new song and we practiced the girl scout handshake. When we were done meeting the girls got cupcakes (thanks tiffany!) and played on the playground. As they left they shook hands (the girl scout way) with me or tiffany and received their petal patches and a laminated copy of the promise and law so they can memorize it by the end of the year. (they are doing great with both!)

We walked from the school to the park. It was overcast while we walked, but still warm. The girls picked up trash on our way to help our community and earth. I was actually surprised at how much they collected.

I had asked the girls to pair up so they could practice the girl scout handshake - and it turned into dancing instead - which was just fine!

Thinking Day - Hungary

We had a fabulous THINKING DAY today. Our country was Hungary. It was not a unanimous decision, and the voting alone nearly put me over the edge - but when they all got to Alice & Francescas today everyone was ready to learn about Hungary. Alices family is from Hungary and she had great knowledge to share- including a fancy poster that they made for the special day. We first made bookmarks inspired by Kolaches designs - embroidery patterns from the country. Then the girls listened to music and watched Hungarian dancing - they even practiced and danced for me at the end of the day so they could be "stars" on YouTube. Then Alice and the girls made Palacsintas. They got to pick out their own filing. They chose between crushed pecans, nutella, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and whipped cream. Most girls even made two. They were delicious! We were missing Payton & Maddie, so it was too bad they werent able to make it. Toni got to be our helping mom for the day - so special thanks to Toni & Alice!!

meeting with no photos

that will never happen. i ALWAYS have my camera and am always documenting. But this last month i had a computer mishap and lost 2 albums... they were downloaded but written over. (OH FRET!) I am still attempting to recover them, but it isn't looking hopeful. I will say that this meeting involved voting for a THINKING DAY country... which was VERY difficult. i was tied 3/3/3 with 10 girls and 1 girl voted twice. so we RE-VOTED, SAME thing happened, but it was different girls not voting and then voting twice. It also involved a huge mess that i documented. LOTS of tissue paper flowers and scraps! If and when i find the photos - i will post them and share!

I am..... posters

I was excited about these posters. I had the idea to have them talk about what made them who they were... what qualities they posses that make them the awesome girls they are. Then my mom suggested passing the posters so that each girl would get to see what their friends think of them as well. I wasnt sure the best way to do it, because not all girls can spell what they want to write and I didnt want the girls to get upset if someone wrote something wrong on their poster, or in a place they didnt want it. SO - we used prewritten stickers. It was nice to have so many helpers. Mayas mom, Amber, and her sister Angel were here to help as well as Cecilia and Ally from an older girl scout troop. They were at our meeting working on a patch to serve a healthy snack to a younger troop. She brought grapes and pretzels. My mom was also there to help. it was also another gorgeous wednesday (we are really lucking out on weather) so the girls got to play in the backyard also. I think the posters they made turned out wonderful!

Learning more about girl scouting (daisys)

Today Estella was our helper.(and i was shocked when i saw Maria was sick, and then again to hear it was Estellsa birthday) I was excited because she is a leader of an older troop. I had some questions about some particials like the friendship circle and also needed some help with the what to do with the troop at the end of the meetings when they run wild. (songs, chants - etc) The girls worked on another flower - "Friendly & Helpful" and we sang happy birthday to Estella... with the "fighting chickens" at the end (i still dont understand that) At the end we worked on learning the friendship circle and the girls did great. Also - my mom, Penny, has been around to help at meeting too. It is good to have an extra pair of hands - the girls keep us all busy. My mom was my girl scout leader when I was growing up, starting as a Brownie troop.

where cookies come from -

I had heard about the cooke pick up and was anxious to witness it. I went along with Tiffany (the courageous cookie mom - and co-leader for our troop) and i expected to be working... moving boxes and boxes of cookies. instead we both just sat there and watched the "machine" of these cookie elves as we moved from station to station (of each different kind of cookie) as our lady read off how many boxes - there would be guys throwing the boxes to each other and another in the car stacking them neatly. it was a very quick, efficient and pretty amazing to watch. 900 some boxes... (not sure how many cases) and we were off to Tiffanys house to unload them in her dining room.

meeting #2

This meeting we started a series of flowers for our daisy flower pots. In the daisy books the girls plant seeds/gardens and watch them grow. I had heard from other troop leaders that it is messy and not all that do-able in colorado in the winter time. Some offered the suggestion to use silk flowers to represent what each flower is teaching us. I thought we would make ours. The first flower is "Honest & Fair" The girls needed a little help, but i think they will get the hang of it as we continue making them. We also had gorgeous weather, so the girls got some outside time as well. The helper today was Stephanie & samantha Adamson- thanks for the help!
